Microsoft Nigeria and The Future Project announce Demo Day for Accelerate LABS participants across Nigeria

  

                        

The Future Project, in partnership with Microsoft, has announced the Demo Day for Accelerate LABS participants scheduled to take place in Lagos on Saturday, 3 February, 2018.

Launched last August, the nationwide entrepreneurship initiative is intended to support and equip 2,160 Nigerian youths with technology-driven status required to build socially-responsible enterprises.

With over 3,000 participants registered under the first stream, young entrepreneurs who passed through the screenings under the initiative will be provided the opportunity to exhibit their products for purchase and also pitch ideas for possible investment at the event.

Speaking during the announcement, Bukonla Adebakin, the Project Lead, The Future Project emphasised the importance of the Demo Day, stating that it was a culmination of the training, investment, and efforts of participants, partners, and mentors under the Accelerate LABS program.

“Trainings were held across the six geo-political zones of the country, with over 2,000 participants going through months of intensive training modules. Due to the assessment and positive feedback from classes on pitch presentation, funding proposals, client relations, and others, we are certain that these trainees will impress investors and set precedence for future participants,” she stated.

“Microsoft YouthSpark empowers youth to imagine and realise their full potential by connecting them with greater opportunities for education, employment and entrepreneurship, helping them create a real impact for a better tomorrow”said Olusola Amusan, Citizenship Lead, Microsoft Nigeria.

Registrations into the second stream of Accelerate LABS has also been announced, with more training to be made accessible to prospective candidates across the country this year.

Apple Launches iPhone X IN Nigeria

 

 

On Friday, December 8, 2017, the iPhone X officially launced in Nigeria. Apple, the world’s biggest smartphone maker, unveiled ths device at the Wings Concrete Lounge, Wings Office Complex; 17A Ozumba Mbadiwe, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The iPhone X is Apple’s most recent product right after the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 plus. It comes with the most advanced technology with flawless hardware design and a range of new service offerings.

Speaking at the launch, Head West Africa Operations, Redington, Sivadoss Vijayakumar, emphasized the importance of innovation and excellent design in creating devices that address the demands of the users through functionality and emotional value. He stated that the iPhone consistently bridges the gap between the customers and the brand thereby building a lasting relationship.

“The iPhone has existed in the Nigerian market for a long time, and has a reputation of a fashionable feel that every user loves to have. We are delighted about this launch, we are happy with the reception from our customers,” Shankar added.

The device has a Super Retina display that features a 2436 x 1125 resolution with 458 pixels per inch, the highest resolution and pixel density Apple has introduced in an iPhone. It offers True Tone technology, which uses an ambient light sensor to adjust the white balance of the display to match the ambient lighting in any room.

Facebook unveils the most powerful ways people connected in 2017

    

Facebook has announced its 2017 Year in Review, highlighting the most powerful ways people came together on Facebook to support one another.

First, people came together to react and talk about important moments and events that happened around the world. These top three moments that people discussed globally in 2017 were:

International Women’s Day: This was the No. 1 most talked about moment in 2017, doubling from last year, with people around the world talking, sharing and posting in celebration of women and related issues.

Super Bowl 51: Fans around the world turned to News Feed to cheer for their favourite teams, celebrate with Lady Gaga and debate the top TV ads, with more than 262 million views of Super Bowl-related videos on the platform

Las Vegas Violence: This tragic incident drove conversation around the world, which in turn motivated more than 3,300 people to offer help to their community through our Crisis Response tools on Facebook.

Second, people came together to support one another in times of crisis. 2017 was a difficult year with natural disasters and violence around the world, but it was inspiring to see people help each other when they needed it most. The top three moments where people came to each other’s aid on Facebook were:

Earthquake in Mexico: The response to this crisis in late September drove the highest number of total interactions within Crisis Response on Facebook of the year, with millions of people marking themselves safe, offering help to their communities or donating to the cause.

Hurricane Harvey: In late August, the community rallied to help those in need by raising more than $20 million in the biggest fundraising effort for a single crisis in 2017 on Facebook.

One Love Manchester: The most viewed video and live broadcast on Facebook in 2017, this benefit concert generated over 80 million views and raised more than $450,000 for those affected by the Manchester terror attack.

Finally, people used Facebook to get together in person. The top two ways people connected through these offline moments by creating Events on Facebook were:

Total Solar Eclipse: This celestial moment in August brought the world together through more than 20,000 Facebook Events in more than 80 countries.

Women’s March on DC: On January 21, The Women’s March on DC brought over 500,000 people together through the largest Facebook event for a single cause in 2017.

Your Year In Review

Facebook also wants to create a Year In Review for you. Starting Wednesday, you may see a personalized video in your News Feed. This video includes moments from this past year that you’ve shared or been tagged in, and compiles them in a short video that can be edited and shared. You can access your video by visiting facebook.com/yearinreview.

Methodology

The top moments of this year’s Year In Review were determined by gathering a list of the top keywords by volume mentioned in a single day on Facebook between January 1st and November 1st, 2017. To identify which topics were unique to 2017, Facebook compared these keywords to the previous year’s maximum single-day volume.

This means that keywords such as Mother’s Day and Halloween, which typically represent the top moments every year, do not repeatedly appear at the top of the list.

Heineken emerges ‘Brand of the Year’ at ADVAN Awards for Marketing Excellence 2017

Heineken, the international premium beer brand under the stable of Nigerian Breweries Plc., emerged as the ‘Brand of the Year, West Africa’ at the ADVAN Awards for Marketing Excellence on Saturday, 11 November, 2017.

The brand also took home the award for ‘Campaign of the Year’, while Obabiyi Fagade, Brand Manager, Heineken, got the much-coveted ‘Brand Manager of the Year’ award.

Held at the Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos, Heineken won top prizes at the event for demonstrating strong leadership and innovation, excellent consumer perception, and most importantly, a seamless execution of the credential campaign ‘There’s More Behind The Star’ with international artiste, Jidenna.

Speaking shortly after the event, Mr. Fagade dedicated the awards to the Heineken team, describing it as a worthy recognition of its hard work and passion.

YNaija partners the National Endowment for Democracy and The Future Project to launch Y! Monitor

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and The Future Project (TFP) in partnership with YNaija.com, the online newspaper for young Nigerians have launched the ‘YNaija Accountability Project’.

Tagged the Y! Monitor, the YNaija Accountability Project highlights crucial accountability issues as it relates to governance on various levels. It is set up to track public issues, provide accurate information through the media and generate actions that influence governance outcomes.

“The goal of the project is to have more involved citizens with access to information about the government’s commitments and to ensure that government is open in all its dealings,” said Bukonla Adebakin, Project Lead, The Future Project.

To bring governance and accountability issues closer to the digitally connected citizen, the project launched a web portal (http://YMonitor.org/) to track data, identify trends, aggregate stories that encourage active citizenship, and stimulate the government to make better and more inclusive choices.

“We all have questions about the government and this project will provide answers to pressing issues or questions posed by citizens while empowering them,” said Isime Esene, Managing Editor, Y!/YNaija.com.

Driven by NED and TFP, the goal of the Project is to empower the next generation of leaders through sustained policy monitoring and civic mobilization in Nigeria through quality reporting.

Union Bank wins ITF award for human capital development

The Industrial Training Fund of Nigeria (ITF) announced Union Bank of Nigeria Plc. as the “Overall Best Contributing Employer in Human Resources” for the year 2015. The innovative financial institution was presented with the award by the Deputy Director, ITF on Monday, August 8, 2016.

Selected over 8,000 contributing employers in the Lagos Island Area, Union Bank spends an average of 200 million yearly to train its employees in addition to consistent intake of interns and students on industrial training. The financial institution also carries out regular safety training for its people with accordance to the ITF training standards.

“Union Bank started its transformation drive 3 years ago and an integral part of that transformation is looking after our people. Training is definitely a critical part of the wellbeing of the employees of any organization and therefore, we ensure to invest a lot in the development of our people so it is great to be recognized for the effort we put in.” said Kandolo Kasongo, Executive Director and Chief Risk Officer, Union Bank.

Facebook will unveil its 10-year roadmap at the Developer Event in Lagos

Facebook is hosting a ‘Facebook for Developers workshop’ for Nigerian engineers, product managers and partners in Lagos on Wednesday 31 August, 2016 to help them build better applications and monetise them more effectively.

The session will be jam-packed with valuable practical advice and detailed information about how developers can take advantage of the latest features on Facebook platforms, Bots on Messenger and Open Source development tools.

Speakers at the event will include: Ime Archibong, Director of Global Product Partnerships at Facebook; Christine Abernathy, Developer Advocate on the Open Source team at Facebook; Chukwuemeka Afigbo, Strategic Products Partnerships Manager at Facebook and Jon Heaton, Partner Engineer on the Facebook Messenger team.
